Born on May 15, 1931, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Mary Lee Turner and Charles Turner, William’s life began with humble roots but would grow into a legacy of extraordinary impact. He was educated in the Indianapolis Public Schools, attending School #42 and later Crispus Attucks High School, where he distinguished himself both academically and through his participation in football and ROTC. He graduated in 1951, already embodying the discipline, determination, and dignity that would define his life.
In December 1952, William married the love of his life, his beloved wife and soulmate, Erma Beverette. Their union, spanning more than 73 years, stood as a testimony of enduring love, unwavering commitment, and sacred partnership. Together, they built a family rooted in strength and grace, raising three children: Leslie L. Walton, Derek R. Turner, and Angela J. Turner. His legacy continues through his grandsons—Marcus Turner (Wendy), Terence Walton (Heather), and Kason Turner—and his great-grandsons, Miles Turner and Joshua Turner, as well as his great-granddaughter, Ruby Turner.
A Man of Faith
At the heart of William’s life was a deep and abiding faith in God. For more than 50 years, he was a devoted and faithful member of Witherspoon Presbyterian Church. His presence was not fleeting—it was foundational. Week after week, year after year, he showed up—not just in attendance, but in spirit, in commitment, and in quiet devotion. His faith was not performative; it was practiced. It was seen in the consistency of his service, the humility of his posture, and the reverence with which he approached the house of the Lord. He believed in the sacredness of worship and carried himself as one entrusted with the responsibility of honoring God in all things. Through changing seasons, shifting times, and evolving generations, he remained steady—anchored in faith, grounded in grace, and committed to the call of Christ.
A Man of Service
William Turner was service personified. After serving his country with honor, he retired from the United States Air Force after 21 years as a Master Sergeant—a testament to his discipline, leadership, and unwavering dedication. Yet even after retiring from military service, he continued to give, working for 17 years as a Customer Service Engineer with Unisys, bringing excellence and integrity to his work. Not one to remain idle, in 1991 he co-founded EBC Company, a computer business he operated alongside partners for a decade, once again demonstrating his forward-thinking spirit and commitment to growth. But perhaps his most profound service was rendered in the house of God. For over five decades at Witherspoon Presbyterian Church, Mr. Turner served faithfully as both a Deacon and Head Usher. He was often among the first to arrive and the last to leave. He ensured that the doors of the church were open, that every person was greeted with dignity, and that worship flowed with order and excellence. He did not simply hold these roles—he embodied them. As Head Usher, he set the tone for hospitality, reverence, and structure. As a Deacon, he lived out a ministry of care, compassion, and presence. His leadership was steady, his expectations were clear, and his commitment never wavered. He understood something deeply: that even the smallest acts of service were sacred when done for the glory of God.
A Man of Love
Beyond his titles, beyond his service, William P. Turner was a man of love. He loved his family fiercely and faithfully. He loved his church deeply and sacrificially. He loved his community with quiet strength and enduring presence. His love was not loud—but it was lasting; not boastful—but it was boundless; not fleeting—but it was faithful. It was seen in the way he cared for his wife, the way he supported his children, the way he embraced his grandchildren, and the way he lived his life—with integrity, humility, and grace. Mr. William P. Turner lived a life that mattered—a life anchored in faith, a life poured out in service, and a life rooted in love. And now, having run his race and finished his course, he rests in the eternal presence of the God he served so faithfully. Yet even in his passing, his legacy remains—in the church he helped shape, in the family he nurtured, and in every life he touched. Well, done, good and faithful servant.
