Horace Eugene “Gene” Dungan, Sr., 80, of Jackson, passed away February 5, 2017 at Jackson Medical Center. He was born September 26, 1936 in Selma to Straughter Herman “Dick” Dungan and Alma Irene Putnam Dungan. A U.S. Army veteran, serving in Korea during the post Korean Conflict, he was also a member of the local VFW post and a loyal fan of Alabama football. He was also a member of Jackson Assembly of God Church and a graduate of Coffeeville High School. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen Lee Headley Dungan and son, Horace Eugene Dungan, Jr. He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Ann (Joel) Broadhead, Cynthia “Jeannie” (David) Gill; grandchildren, Paula Irene (Wesley) Brunson, Charli Nicole Gill, Claire Helen Gill, Thomas Leroy Dungan and great-grandson, Frank Nicholas Moye, Jr. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson with the Revs. E.C. Russell and Woodrow Hudson officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at the new Leroy Baptist Church Cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home directing. Military honors were provided by the U.S. Army that included Taps and a presentation of the U.S. flag to his daughter, Deborah Broadhead on behalf of President Donald Trump. Pallbearers will be Lloyd Harvison, Joel Broadhead, David Gill, J.R. Morgan, Glen Ward and Frank Moye. Honorary pallbearers will be James Morgan, Wesley Brunson and Thomas Dungan.
