Joan Miriam Horton

Joan Shepard Horton, 74, of Leroy, AL passed away on Friday, August 22, 2014 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, AL. She was a teacher at Jackson High School for 27 years and later at Tuskegee University for 17 years. Mrs. Horton was a 1958 graduate of Leroy High School. She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama, her Master’s degree and EDS degree from Livingston University she had also been studying for her Doctorate through Appalachian State University. Joan loved Alabama football and was a member of Tide Pride. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Horton, who died in 2006. She is survived by her son, John (Tracy) Horton of Northport, AL; two sisters: Shirley Chalkley of Tuscaloosa, AL and Charlene Schmitz of Leroy, AL; two grandchildren: Collin Horton and Nicholas Horton; nieces and nephews: Gena Richardson, Tanya Thomas, Jared Thomas, Les Chalkley, Clint Chalkly and Lynn White; numerous other friends and loved ones. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 24, 2014 from 2-3PM at Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson with the service beginning at 3PM with Bro. Ben Stubblefield officiating. Burial will follow in the Pine Grove Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Mike Schmitz, Clint Chalkley, Less Chalkly, Drew White, Gary Horton and Keith Horton. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. John McAtee of Foley, AL, Dr. Gary Edwards, Leroy High School Class of 1958, Dr. James Bailey and Joe Powell.
