Calvin Chapman was born October 4, 1946 in Twiggs County, Georgia to Johnnie B Chapman and Lois Mims-Chapman . He was the eldest of five children, three sisters and one brother. He attended elementary and junior high schools in Cleveland Ohio. Afterwhich, the family relocated to New Jersey where Calvin completed his high school education in the Hudson County School System. Calvin would then join St. John Baptist Church in Jersey City New Jersey where he gave his life to Christ as an adult. In 1966, he actively enrolled in the US Army and served 20 years. He was a member of the Mason Brotherhood and an Eastern Star. While living in New Jersey, he worked for Westinghouse and the Dept of Corrections which is where he formed friendships that lasted until his demise.
Through family and friends, he met Clote Fuqua and later they joined in holy matrimony. Of that union, they were blessed with three children, Erica, Craig, and James(deceased). In 2005, after working very hard for many years, both Calvin and Clote retired and moved to Jackson Mississippi where they became members of Stronger Hope Church until 8/23/2022 when God called Calvin home from labor to his eternal rest.
Calvin was known for his dry sense of humor. But you had to know him to love him. And though he didn’t always make it easy, he was indeed loved by many. He belonged to a traveling club of friends, who traveled all over the world together. Also, Oftentimes, Calvin could be found sitting in his chair or his truck in the driveway listening to his gospel or blues music. He also loved to frequent his favorite barber shop, pharmacy, and cleaners most times just to talk to some of his favorite people. One thing is for sure he loved his family. It was nothing for him to catch a flight or hop in his truck, with Clote riding shotgun, and head to New Jersey, Georgia, South Carolina, or Florida, to see his family. In Atlanta, his eldest granddaughter Kyanna and grandson AJ was known for always asking “granddaddy, what do you want?”, And he loved it because he knew he was about to be spoiled. And while he may not have said it often, if he spent any time on you, you knew were loved by him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Denise Chapman, his brother John L Chapman, and his son James Jamal Alford.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife Clote Chapman; daughter Erica Berry; son and daughter-in-law Craig and Katrina Chapman; his two sisters Lorraine Chaney and Bonita Montes De Oca; his three granddaughters, Kyanna Alford, Dominique Smith (Michael) and Tamaya Chapman; his three grandsons, Al-Juwon Alford (Hope), Tahjallah Oliver (Shariah) and Darius Chapman; eleven great grandchildren; two brother in laws and two sister in laws and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
