Janice May Powell Dicken, 75, of Brandon, MS crossed the threshold of Heaven into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 8, 2022. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 12, 2022 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at Colonial Heights Baptist Church with a celebration of life service to follow. Graveside service will be held afterwards at Lakewood Memorial Park in Jackson, MS.
Jan was born May 11, 1947 to the late Russell and Julia Powell in Farmington, New Mexico. She moved to Yukon, Oklahoma and spent most of her childhood there. In 1963 her family moved to Crystal Springs, MS where she graduated high school in 1965. After graduation Jan attended Co-Lin Community College from 1965 to 1967 and then went on to attend the University of Southern Mississippi where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work. Upon graduation, Jan took a position with the Welfare Department of Human Services before transferring to the MS Department of Rehabilitation Services where she worked 42 years prior to retiring in 2013.
Jan is survived by her husband of 22 years, William A. “Bill” Dicken, Jr.; brother, George Thompson of San Antonio, TX and three daughters which she inherited after their marriage in 2000, Angie Cummins (William), Michele Humphries (Derek), and Shea Liggett (Dewayne); nine grandchildren, Mackenzie Cummins Cook (Philip), Bailey Cummins, Chandler Humphries (Shelby), Lawson Bridges, Landon Bridges, Mary Katheryn Bridges, Blake Humphries, Julia and John David Liggett all of whom she loved as her own. She is preceded in death by her sister, Joy Wallace and her brother, James Dirickson. She enjoyed family, gatherings to eat, play board games and taking trips to the beach. You could always find her reading a good book, playing bridge with friends, or traveling with her high school besties “Rosebuds” and “Daffodils.”
As an active member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church since 1996 she served in several different capacities. Her love and desire for everyone to know the Lord took her all over the world on mission trips spreading His word and love. Jan also served in leadership roles in the Xi Beta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority from 1990 to 2007 where she made many lifelong friends.
Our Jan “Nana” will be truly missed but we rejoice and are at peace knowing that she is healed, free of pain, and in the arms of our loving Father.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Colonial Heights Baptist Church missions fund in Jan’s honor.
