Former Jackson resident Jean Christian Shorter, 85, died May 18, 2012, at her residence of Ivy Hall at St. Ives in Alpharetta, Georgia. A visitation will be held at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home, 5235 Robinson Road, Jackson on Friday, May 25, 2012 from 10am – 11am with graveside services to follow at 11:30am at Lakewood Memorial Park, 6000 Clinton Boulevard, Jackson, Mississippi.
Mrs. Shorter was born April 2, 1927, in Charleston, South Carolina, to Curtis and Wilhelmina Christian. Jean was a bank teller and later a bank branch manager’s assistant for many of her earlier years. In later life she assisted at her church and also performed regular community service, voluntarily manning voter polling stations. Jean had an avid appreciation for music, including jazz, show tunes, pop and classical. Her appreciation for films from the 30's, 40's and 50's enabled her to name practically every actor. Jean loved to read and also enjoyed and wrote poetry.
Jean met and married Ernest Shorter, 1950, in Albany, Georgia, having two sons while there. In 1959 the family moved to Jackson, Mississippi where she lived until moving back to Georgia in 2005. During her time in Jackson she was a member of Epworth Methodist Church on McDowell Road.
Jean is survived by her son Kevin Shorter and his wife Sandra Shorter of Lawrenceville, GA; granddaughters, Tara Austin of Nashville, TN, Kristin Shorter, of Duluth, GA, and Carrie Selecky of Long Beach, CA; nieces and nephews, Patti Howze of Albany, GA, Chesley Wars of Leesburg, GA, Susan Shorter of Memphis, TN, Karen Billingsley of Elkhorn, NE, Carl Shorter of Memphis TN, and John Snapkoski of Silver Springs, MD.
