Mary Ruth Hall left our world early Thursday, January 17, 2019, at 93 years of age. Born and raised in D’ Lo, Mississippi, she was the daughter of Plummer D. Smith and Ruth Beatty Smith. Ruth went to school in D’ Lo and graduated from Mendenhall High School. She met her “Buddy” (William H. Hall, Jr.) and married him in 1944. When Buddy went off to war in the European theatre, Ruth held things together at home until the war was over. She had graduated from Clark’s Business School and worked as a clerk, secretary, and a bookkeeper. When Buddy came home, they moved to Jackson; and Ruth worked at Knox Glass while Buddy worked at Brown- Lewis as a mechanic.
In 1949, they had their first daughter, Emily Ruth; and in 1951 added their second daughter, Deborah Kay. These two girls were truly the highlight of their lives. She was a stay-at-home mom until her girls were well up in school. She was the caregiver for her mother, her father, and her Aunt Bert. She was an avid gardener and loved growing and sharing her vegetables.
After retirement, Ruth and Buddy moved to Clinton, but they kept their friendships and associations with neighbors, the Forest Hill Masonic Lodge, and the Forest Hill Order of the Eastern Star. Ruth was devoted to her church and was Sunday school teacher for the toddler class at Westview Baptist. Later, she moved her membership to Wildwood Baptist Church in Clinton and truly loved her new Sunday school friends. Her Christian faith was a very important part of her life.
After Buddy passed away, Ruth took care of their dog, Lucky, and an assortment of feral cats. She was a very independent person and determined to stay in her own home. Eventually, caregivers came in to make that possible.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband, her parents, and her brothers Kenneth Clayton and David Burl. She is survived by her daughters Emily Hall Moorer (Bill) and Deborah Kay Hall (Ron Smith), her grandchildren Chad and Greg Moorer (Diana) and Evan and Sam Smith, and her great grandchildren Teodoro and Annabelle Moorer.
The family would like to thank all of Ruth’s care-givers for their love and support during her final days. Special thanks go to Janette Lewis, Rose Catchings, and Kristy Woods, and all the other wonderful caregivers from Home Instead.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Ruth’s name to the Mississippi Animal Rescue League or to the Clinton Community Christian Corporation.
