

Melton “Claitor” Johnson, 92, fell asleep in the Lord early Monday morning, June 13, 2016. Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church of Pearl on Thursday, June 16, 2016 from 12:00-2:00 PM with funeral services beginning at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
Claitor was born in Winston County, Mississippi, on June 27, 1923 to the late Melton Caswell Johnson and Carrie Mae Dean Johnson. A WWII Veteran, he served as a mechanic stationed in England. Then, following the D-Day invasion, he came ashore at Normandy as a truck driver hauling ammunitions to the front lines. Claitor served in this capacity until the war’s end including making numerous trips to the front during the Battle of the Bulge. Upon returning to Mississippi, he married Jane Buford and worked as a truck driver for City Service Oil Company followed by working as a plumber with Buford Plumbing Co. until his retirement. He was an avid traveler going to many places including Alaska. Claitor was a deacon in the Baptist Church, a Mason, and a Shriner.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Jane; his second wife, Charlene; his parents; three brothers, John, Walter and Raymond and one sister, Mae Massey.
Claitor is survived by his son, Dean of Clinton, MS and grandchildren, Nancy and Andrew. He is also survived by Ms. Doris Everitt, his loving, faithful companion; friends and caregivers, Ms. Pete Mapp and Mack Clements all of Pearl, MS. Claitor is also survived by his two loving sisters, Frances Tabor of Louisville and Kathleen Read of Columbus.
