Palmer L. Quarterman

Palmer L. Quarterman, age 91, passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at The Arbor in Ridgeland. Visitation will be held Monday, January 24, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at the Greeting Courtyard at First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, followed by the funeral services at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary. Graveside Service will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Palmer was born in Oldenburg, Mississippi, on January 13, 1920, to Thomas P. and Lillie Guice Quarterman. The family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, when he was seven years old. He studied accounting at Loyola University and became a CPA. He worked for the Internal Revenue Service, various CPA firms and manufacturing companies.

Palmer served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 and attended OCS at Duke University. He was commissioned a Finance Officer, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. He spent 2 ½ years with the Ninth Air Force in Europe.

He moved to Jackson, Mississippi, to accept the job as Division Controller of Knox Glass Company. He concluded his career as Controller with the Clarion Ledger for seventeen years and retired in 1985.

Palmer was well-known as a local photographer, having taken many photos of weddings and Little League events. He enjoyed many hobbies, including golf, ham radio, woodworking, genealogy and sailing.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Ruling Elder.

While stationed in Texas, he met his future wife, Norma Carlson; they were married just two months before his leaving for war in Europe. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Q. Reid (Ken) of Olive Branch, MS. He is survived by his loving wife, Norma, and their children: Charles P. Quarterman (Millie) of Jackson, MS; Dr. Clayton E. Quarterman (Darlene) of Odessa, Ukraine; and Cynthia Q. Hagerman (Johnny), of Aliceville, AL. Also surviving are ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
