

Peggy Kirkland Sims, of Jackson, died peacefully at the age of 90 on May 8, 2015 at Hospice Ministries of Ridgeland. She was preceded in death by her parents, L. C. and Mamie Kirkland of Jackson; her husband, Pat Sims, and her daughter, Peggy Sims Furini of Laurel. Peggy was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 1924. She was a graduate of the Mississippi State College for Women (MSCW). Following college, she lived in Columbia, Mississippi before moving to Jackson in 1959. Peggy worked from 1965-1995 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center as the administrative assistant to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. During her early career with the Department, she worked in personnel, finance and planning for Dr. Henry Thiede, Chairman of the Department. Later in her career, she worked particularly closely with Dr. Winfred Wiser, who was Chairman of the Department when she retired. Peggy had many great years at UMCC with the physicians, faculty members and staff, many of whom are her closest friends. She was devoted to her family, and was known for her kindness and her gentle spirit. Peggy had a talent for writing and her literary style and personal notes to family members will be cherished forever. Her surviving family includes her daughter, Patricia Sims Harmon (Steve) of Columbia and her son, Joseph Kirkland Sims (Kandy) of Jackson. She was a loving Grandmother to Elisabeth Zerkus (Bill) of Columbia, Steven Kirkland Harmon of Columbia, William Todd Harmon (Kelli ) of Columbia, Joseph Kirkland Sims, Jr. ( Caroline) of Jackson, Mary Katherine Whelan (Josh) of Oxford, Claire Douglas Sims of Jackson, Michael Anthony Furini (Amy) of Richland and Mark Alan Furini of Albuquerque, NM. Peggy had nine great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the charity of your choice. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the loving and caring staff at the Lakeland Nursing & Rehab Facility and at Hospice Ministries of Ridgeland. Visitation will be held at Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson on Tuesday, May 12 from 9:30 am to 11:00 am, with a service to follow at the Church at 11:00 am.
