The Lord called Roxie home on Monday, May 26, 2025, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Lakewood Funeral Home beginning at 10:00 AM with a graveside service to follow at 11:00 AM.
Roxie was born on March 21, 1936, in Lafayette, TN to the parents of Dessie Ray Doss and Gracie Aline Andrews Doss. She was married to Manship Phelps 42 years at the time of his death in 2015.
She and Manship were longtime members of Colonial Heights Baptist Church, Ridgeland where she actively served. Roxie was very gifted, and she used those special talents to serve the Lord in many ways. She had the gift of hospitality, serving, mercy, & giving to name a few plus she was very creative.
She enjoyed hosting family get togethers, having friends over for meals or church family over for fellowships. She volunteered her time by teaching ceramics classes, helping decorate for various church events, assisting with Vacation Bible School, and serving in the nursery where babies and young children held a special place in her heart.
Roxie was known by her siblings as Meval, Rox to Manship, Mom to her kids, Roxie to friends, and more often she answered to “Mimi” from her loving grands and great grands.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Manship, one brother, Timmy Rayborn Doss and one sister, Hester Christine Doss along with three brothers-in-law, James Spivey, Joe Henson and Norman Clark.
She is survived by her sons, Mike King of Canton, Steve Phelps (Gina) of Madison and Richard Phelps (Janna) of Madison, her stepdaughters, Sara Hewes (Andy) of Houston, TX, Judi Phelps Adams (Vickie Stewart) of Madison along with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she loved greatly.
She is also survived by her siblings, Bud Doss (Marie), Billy Doss, Carol Spivey, Shirley Henson, Kay Clark, and Steven Doss (Susie) who reside in Kentucky and Tennessee along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Her pallbearers will be her three sons, Mike, Steve and Richard along with her grandsons, Jeremy, Justin, Ethan and Luke as well as her “adopted” grandson, Johnathan.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to Gateway Rescue Mission, 328 S. Gallatin Street, Jackson, MS 39203, where Roxie volunteered in the past.
A special thank you to the staff and many care givers from the Rose Garden & the Arbor at The Orchard along with Arden Hospice. Her family appreciates the skilled care and compassion that you gave to her.
