Sandra Jones Huff, daughter of Homer and Gladys Pierce Jones, died peacefully on April 9, after a long battle with Alzheimers Disease. Sandra was born and spent most of her life in Jackson, Mississippi. She grew up near many cousins, aunts, and uncles and attended Parkway Baptist Church. She graduated from Provine High School in 1960 and attended Mississippi College and later Baylor University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Physical Education. Later in life, she earned a Masters of Arts in Christian Education from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
Sandra loved being a homemaker and mother and was active in her church and in her children’s schools. After raising a family, she used her gifts of ministry to serve as Activity Director at Crossgates Nursing Home and led an Adult Day Program at Galloway United Methodist Church. She was also involved in ministries at Crossgates Baptist Church where she helped with hospital visitation, the singles ministry, the food pantry, Celebrate Recovery, and the women’s prison ministry. She served as a Chaplain at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, from where she retired in 2003.
Sandra and her then husband, Ray Huff, had three children, Kathy Rice (Mike) of Lewisville, Texas, Jonathan of Dallas, Texas, and Elizabeth Brandon (Steve) of Jackson, Mississippi. She has five grandchildren; Nathan Rice of Denton, Texas, Sam Rice of Chicago, Illinois, Nicholas, Margaux, and Cheyenne Huff of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Sandra loved spending time with family and was always up for road trips, movies, and the occasional fun day off from school. She was a talented gardener and often worked in her garden until bedtime in the summers. She liked to share her plants and flowers and hoped they would bring people as much joy as they brought her.
Sandra had been living in Denton, Texas, near Kathy who cared for her, for the last six years. Kathy, Jonathan, and Nathan were with her the day she died. She will be remembered as a woman who loved people, but Jesus most of all. In her Bible she wrote, “If you love Jesus, you always have a reason to celebrate!” Those who knew her will never forget her radiant smile that seemed to say, “I love you!”
Her Celebration of Life service will be held at Lakewood Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. April 19, 2021 with a visitation one hour prior.
