She is survived by three children, Erik (Mary) Stoer, Jan (Ed) Routon and Charles (Danielle) Stoer; 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Stoer was born December 31, 1923 to Oliver M. Holman and Gertha (Powell) Holman near Coffee Springs, AL. She is also survived by one brother, Charles Holman of Graceville, FL. Her mother later remarried, and her stepfather, A. D. Simpson, loved and reared both Jessie and Charles as his own.
Jessie graduated from Graceville High School before leaving to enter Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans in 1942, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1944. Always cheerful, her fellow students claimed Jessie was always "bright as a new penny", thereby nicknaming her "Penny."
While in New Orleans, Penny met a medical student, Ulysses Haywood "Hank" Stoer from Shreveport, LA, whom she married in 1946. She followed him in his medical practice first to Ft. Lewis, WA in the Army, and later to both New Orleans and Shreveport, where she was active in both her church and community. She later moved to Monroe, LA and then Trenton, TN, eventually settling in Humboldt, where she lived while working as a nurse in increasingly responsible positions at Humboldt General Hospital until her retirement.
She was a Godly woman who enjoyed gardening, church work, and helping others until declining health required a move in recent years to The Meadows in Nashville, where she had many friends and continued to enjoy life, always striving to enrich and encourage those around her.
Visitation with the family will be at the George A. Smith Funeral Home, 2812 North Highland, Jackson, TN on Friday, March 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 30th at the First Baptist Church in Humboldt. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m., at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville.
Memorial donations may be made to the Wears Valley Ranch (a Christian home for children), 3601 Lyon Springs Rd., Sevierville, TN 37862; or to the First Baptist Church, 3400 E. Mitchell St., Humboldt, TN 38343.
The family would especially like to thank the staff of The Meadows for the care and kindness shown to Mrs. Stoer over the past few years.
