Funeral Services for Robert E. (Gene) Curlin, 84 of Jackson, will be conducted on Friday, March 16, 2018, at 2:00 PM in the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons with burial to follow in Woodland Cemetery in Haywood County. Brother Ron Hale will officiate this service.
Mr. Curlin passed away on March 13, 2018. He was born in Madison County on November 4, 1933 to the late Robert T. and Evelyn Taylor Curlin.
He graduated from the former Mercer High School in 1951 and went to work on the family farm and dairy farm until he joined the Jackson Police Department in August 1957. Mr. Curlin went up through the ranks from patrolman retiring with the rank of Executive Deputy Chief after 32 years of service. He attended many seminars and obtained many certifications through J.S.C.C and Lambuth University while he was with the police department.
R.E. was an avid outdoorsman and continued farming with his brother for many years while working with J.P.D. After retiring from the city, he was employed by the state as a part-time Forrester. In 1990 R.E. transferred to the T.W.R.A. and proclaimed it the best job a man could ever have.
He was a lifetime member of the Jackson Police Department Association, the F.O.P. and was on the legislative committee of the State Chiefs Association for one year. R.E. was a booster club member at Union University for many years and a great supporter of women's basketball. He and Joann enjoyed traveling with the team. He was a long time member of West Jackson Baptist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife Joann Ward Curlin, daughter Gina Curlin Wilson (Charles) of Jackson, 1 sister Carol Mathis of Memphis, 2 brothers Harvey Lee Curlin (Betty) of Haywood County, Glenn Curlin (Kathy) of Jackson, and 1 grandson Jake Taylor Wilson.
Visitation with the family will be held on Friday from 12:00 PM noon until the time of the service at 2:00 PM in the North Chapel.
