

Mr. Young was born in Gadsden, TN on May 20, 1925. He graduated from Gadsden High School in 1943. He was a WWII combat veteran in Europe, serving under Gen. George Patton in the 4th Armored Division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and several other major battles. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1980. For many years he grew tomato plants and other vegetables. This "digging in the dirt" was his favorite hobby and what he loved doing the most.
He was a member of Browns UMC and Browns Ruritan where his club nickname was "Green Thumb."
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Peggy Jean Hunt Young; his parents, John WIlliam and Ioma Boals Young; and four brothers, V.C., James, Robert Glynn, and Travis Young.
He is survived by his wife, Nell Young; daughter, Jan Stanfill; and three sons, Mike Young (Millie), David Young (Marguerite), and Jay Young (Paula); grandchildren, Mary Anne Young, Matthew Hunt Young, Patrick Young, John David Young, Brandon Stanfill, and Adam Stanfill, and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services for Mr. Young will be held on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Highland Memorial Gardens with Wayne Foropoulos officiating. Interment will follow. His sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons from 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 18, 2015 until 1:30 p.m.
