Before entering the nursing home, she was in the excellent care of her niece June Miller and husband Glenn Miller. She was born on March 4, 1937, in Reidville, S.C. Her parents were the Rev. William Harper Dendy, Sr. and Eunice Patton Dendy, deceased. Siblings are Eunice Dendy Johnson (Roger), Jacksonville, FL, William Harper Dendy, Jr. (Kathi), Westminster, MD.
Having no children of her own, her nieces and nephews were very special to her. Her nieces and nephews are June J. Miller (Glenn), Andrea J. Altice (Tom), Stephen Dendy (Bradelyn), Nona Davis (Carl), James Dendy (Jeanne). Great nieces and nephews are Greg Miller (Angela), Christopher Miller, Roger Altice, Michael Hudson (Allie), Luke Hudson, Jasmine LeJune, Zina Barnett (Jesse), All of her nieces and nephews fondly called her Aunt “T.”
While young she had the honor of being the mascot for the Reidville Senior High graduating class.
Her education began in Reidville, S.C. as she entered the first grade. She also attended the Summerville, S.C. area schools and the Whitmire, S.C, area schools.
She was very popular at Whitmire High School. She twirled her baton as a majorette with the Whitmire High School marching band. She had the special honor of being May Queen her senior year. Her friends were very special to her.
After graduation, she attended Lander College, Greenwood, S.C. Alston loved to sing, listen and dance to music. She entertained by singing both in church and other places. She was an actress in several little theaters in Jacksonville, FL and North Carolina. She was involved in Helen Keller, Guys and Dolls, and A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum. She was asked to sing for the weddings and anniversaries of her relatives.
While living in Jacksonville, FL she loved the ocean and would take her sister and her children out to the beach. That was a special time.
Her professional career included State Farm general office and Barnett Bank in Jacksonville, Fl., and trucking companies in North and South Carolina.
She retired to North Carolina and was hostess at Cracker Barrel in Asheville, N.C. She enjoyed both her mountain and lake homes. Her hobbies included writing workshops, painting, playing the lap harp, crocheting and knitting, and hiking, etc. She loved and visited Montreat, N.C. from childhood to an adult.
Graveside services will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 20, 2022.
