Amadeo Mendez-Vigo “Amie” went home to be with his Lord on Nov. 25, 2010 after a three-plus year struggle from a debilitating stroke. Born Feb. 3, 1927 in Tampa to Castor & Louisa Mendez-Vigo, he moved to Jacksonville in 1967. He served his country in both WWII and the Korean War. Rising from very humble beginnings to become a CLU for Metropolitan Life, he turned the Jax office from #947 to #1 in the entire country where it remained until his retirement. After Met Life, he went on to start and manage five walk-in medical care clinics. Upon retiring once more, he always stayed very active with his family, golf, and stock trading.
“Abuelo” is survived by his loyal wife of 63 years, Alice Alvarez Mendez-Vigo; daughter, Tillie Newkirk (Larry); son, Amadeo Scott Mendez-Vigo; grandchildren, Denise Kent (T.J.), Larry Newkirk III (Melissa) and Tori Mettler (Scott); three great grandchildren and his brother, Cas Mendez-Vigo (Ida).
The family will receive friends for a visitation on Monday, Nov. 29th from 6-8 p.m. at HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 4115 Hendricks Ave. A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, Nov. 30th at 11:00 A.M. at Christian Family Chapel, 10365 St. Augustine Rd.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Missions or Building Funds at Christian Family Chapel. Words of condolence may be shared at www.hardage-giddenshendricksave.com.
