On Saturday, March 9, 2024, August Peter “Gus” Klein left our world to reunite with his wife Judy and peacefully transition to his maker. Born on July 29, 1936 in New York , New York, he spent nearly 88 years on this earth living large.
After growing up in Scarsdale, NY, he attended St. Vincent’s College in Latrobe, PA, graduating in 1957 with a mathematics degree. From there, his successful business career launched and took him and his family all over the country. Fresh out of college he started as an engineer for Boeing, in Seattle and then went to IBM where he found his professional home. After 25 years at IBM, he “retired” as Distribution and Retail Industry Director. He went on to lead multiple technology companies, including Integral Data Systems, Dataproducts and MASSCOMP. When he “retired” a second time, he settled in Ponte Vedra, Fl with his wife, Judy and their five children. There they built their dream home on the Ocean and he then also started the software company UNIQUEST. Not wanting to sit idle after this venture, he and Judy also purchased and managed the local franchise of Paul Davis Restoration which they later sold to his daughter Marguerite and her husband Michael.
Throughout the years he also served on numerous boards including the Computer Museum in Boston, The Stepstone Corporation, BYTEX, Tagnetics and St. Gerard’s. Additionally he was actively involved in the Ponte Vedra chapter of Legatus . Those that knew him know that he took great pride in his business endeavors and that he was also passionate about many other things including his Black Sox softball team, golf and especially the 19th hole while playing cards with his friends, the Boston Red Sox and watching football with a cold St. Pauli Girl beer. But what he loved more than anything was having his large family around him, admittedly often thanks to Judy’s power of gathering people. In retirement he took extra pleasure in witnessing his grandchildren and great grandchildren grow and succeed, always making time to attend their school or sporting activities, travel with them, or just be there when they needed help.
Peter (as he was called by family) is predeceased by Judy, his devoted wife of 63 years, and by his parents August Peter Klein and Muriel Binzen Klein. He is survived by his five children: Marguerite Mumford (Michael), Therese Lavely, Susan Raver (Stephen),August Klein II and Christopher Klein (Cathy). In addition to his children, he leaves behind 8 grandchildren (Emma Thomas, Tabytha Hill, Caitlin Knoll, Christian Raver, Jack Lavely, Michael Mumford, Ryan Klein and Sean Klein), and 5 great grandchildren (Brianna Reed, Bella Thomas, Asa Hill, Maya Knoll and Quinn Knoll). He also leaves behind his brother John E. Klein and sister Mary Luebke Schwab, as well as all of their families, whom he loved and cherished.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 523 Pablo Avenue, Jacksonville Beach, FL. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation to North Florida School of Special Education be made. This is the amazing school that his grandson, Sean Klein, attends and has benefited from.
