Betty Gurney, age 92, passed away suddenly in Orange Park doing what she loved most: preparing for a round of golf. She was born in Tampa, Florida on June 19th, 1930, where she spent her early years. Betty received her bachelor’s degree from FSU in 1951, in the first co-educational graduating class. She holds the honor of being the first woman manager at the South Central Home Office and the first woman manager of Prudential Recreation Athletic Club (PRAC). After 31 years of working for Prudential, she retired.
Betty was an active member in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Southside Newcomers Club, the original Baymeadows Ladies Gold Association (where she twice make a hole-in-one), the Julington Creek Golf Ladies Association, and the Seminole Boosters. She was an avid Seminole fan and loved attending football games.
Betty took great delight in hosting her annual year-end formal seven-course dinner party, which had appropriate wines for each course, for the past 37 years. She also looked forward to her annual week-long golf blowouts in the mountains.
Betty was predeceased by her father Paul Clare Gurney and her mother Harriette Grana Gurney. She is survived by her brother Virgil Gurney and his family of Trinity, North Carolina, the extended Haffner family of Tampa, Florida, her special friend Myrna Stokely, and Myrna’s daughter Sara.
