Betty Barton McGill, 85, passed away on October 3, 2010 after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert of 60 years. Mrs. McGill was born in Jacksonville, Florida. She and her husband lived in New York for ten years before moving to Jacksonville in 1953 and then to Gainesville in 2003. Mrs. McGill was actively involved in volunteer work for over 40 years. In Jacksonville, she served as President of Christ the King Guild; South Jacksonville Deanery; St. Augustine Diocesan Council of Catholic Women; All Saints Home for the Aged Auxiliary; St. Vincent’s Medical Center Auxiliary, where she volunteered for 34 years, and The Association of Florida Hospital Auxiliaries. In Gainesville, she was President of Golden Gator Senior Club and on the Board of Gainesville Newcomers Club. Mrs. McGill is survived by two sons and two daughters, Patrick McGill, Kathleen Carlisle (Lester), Maureen McGill-Smith (Michael), Kevin McGill (Debi); 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Wanda Lanahan, of Jacksonville, plus several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 7-9 pm, Thursday, October 7, 2010, at the funeral home, where the Rosary will begin at 7 pm. Graveside services will be held Friday, October 8, 2010 at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Cemetery (inside Evergreen Cemetery, Gate 4), 4535 N. Main Street, followed by a Celebration of Mass at St. Matthews Catholic Church, 1773 Blanding Blvd at 11:00 am. There will be a Celebration of Life Service held at Holy Faith Catholic Church, 747 NW 43rd Street, Gainesville, Florida at 12:00 noon on October 13, 2010.
