Born and raised in Jacksonville, Carl graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1955 and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Florida. In 1961, he married the love of his life, Margaret (Peggy) Weirk, beginning a marriage that spanned more than six decades and was filled with love, faith, and devotion to family.
Carl’s professional life was marked by distinction and service. He served as Comptroller for the Duval County School System, where he earned recognition as the youngest person in the nation to hold such a position at the time.
A man of deep faith, Carl and Peggy were longtime members of San Jose Episcopal Church, where they built lasting friendships and lived out their Christian values. Outside of his professional and church life, Carl was passionate about classic cars, volunteering each year at the Concours d’Elegance on Amelia Island. He cherished time spent at the beach, cheering on his Florida Gators, and enjoying summers at their Atlantic Beach residence surrounded by family.
Carl and Peggy also shared a love of travel, exploring the world together and creating memories that will be treasured forever.
Carl is survived by his devoted wife Margaret Bennett, his son Jeffrey Carl Bennett, and daughter Beverly Bennett Shaw; Sister Kay Schimmelmann, three granddaughters and their spouses; and three great-grandchildren as well as a niece and nephew and their families. He will be remembered for his kind and caring nature, his steadfast faith, and his unwavering dedication to family and community.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at San Jose Episcopal Church, Jacksonville, Florida. Interment and a reception will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery. All are welcome to attend and honor Carl’s remarkable life.
