Cecil “Wayne” Griffis, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many, entered Glory on June 17, 2025, in Jacksonville, Florida. He lived with quiet strength, deep love for his family, and a lifelong loyalty to his favorite football team—the Florida Gators.
Wayne was born on September 22, 1947, to the late Marvin and Rosie Griffis. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Jerry (Joan) Griffis, Windle (Lilian) Griffis, Vonnie (Randy) Maultsby, and Marie (Clyde) Watson.
He leaves behind a legacy of love in the heart of his wife, Debbie Griffis—his soulmate and best friend for the past 42 years. Wayne was a proud and devoted father to Tammy (Ronnie) Siemering, Rhonda (Norman) Choate, Richard Longino, and Lisa (Tony) Turney.
Known affectionately as “Papa,” Wayne’s greatest joy was his grandchildren: Amber (Joshua) Johnson, Lisa (Manny) Perez, Destiney (Carliss) Miller, Christian Land Sr., Gabe Wilkins, and Brianna Land. His heart was full thanks to his great-grandchildren: Trinity, Hayden, Carson, Phoebe, Emery, Penelope, Lily, and Christian Land Jr.—each of whom brought him endless pride and happiness.
Wayne is also survived by his brother-in-law and friend, Michael Gordon, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends. He will be missed beyond measure by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Wayne dedicated 25 years of his life as a service technician with National Merchandise. Afterward, he served the community of St. Marys while working for the City, from where he eventually retired. His strong work ethic and sense of duty were matched only by his unwavering love for family, friends, and Jesus.
A man of simple pleasures and deep passions, Wayne loved fishing, gospel music, never missed a Gator football game, and—despite the ups and downs—remained a loyal Jacksonville Jaguars fan. He cherished time spent with loved ones, especially on Saturdays filled with family, friends, cookouts, and football. And true to his humble spirit, he always appreciated a good ol’ bologna sandwich.
Wayne was a devout member of Southeast Community Church, where his faith remained a cornerstone of his life.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate Wayne’s life will be held at Hardage-Giddens Greenlawn in Jacksonville, FL, on June 23, 2025. Visitation will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., with the service beginning immediately afterward. All family and friends are invited to attend and share in remembering a truly special man.
Though Wayne has gone to be with the Lord and reunited with his many loved ones, his love, laughter, and legacy will live on in each of us. We take comfort in knowing that he is now fishing in Heaven’s waters and cheering for his Gators from above—and if we had to guess, he probably has a thick-cut bologna sandwich in hand.
