Dr. Clementine Pruitt Sherman was born Clementine Grant on January 14, 1944, in Tuskegee, Alabama to the late Amy Lou Grant Perkins and Roscoe Pruitt. She accepted Christ and received a Certificate of Baptism at the age of 15 on February 1st, 1959, at New Bethel Baptist Church. Clementine grew up as an only child with her mother in Alabama and eventually moved to Belle Glades, Florida where her mother met and married her late stepfather, Gilbert Perkins (2004). As a child, Clementine was very inquisitive and excelled in education. Math and Science were her favorite subjects and she spent countless hours teaching herself new concepts that were beyond her years in school. Her mother worked in the fields picking fruit, washed clothes, collected rent and anything else she needed to do to keep Clementine fed and focused on her education. Success became Clementine’s goal for herself and her mother.
After graduating as Valedictorian from her High School in 1962, Clementine went on to attain her Bachelor of Science Degree from Florida A & M University in 1966 with a Certification in Mathematics. Her first job was as a Teacher with Palm Beach County Public Schools. In 1969, she transferred to the Miami Dade Public School system where she taught Mathematics and earned a Certification in Administration and Supervision. While raising her four daughters and battling renal failure, Clementine completed a Master’s degree from University of Miami. During the 20 years that she served with Dade County Public Schools as a Mathematics teacher, Clementine rose to the top of her field and held several administrative positions throughout her career including Administrator Supervisor of her Department; Division Director of USI Mathematics and Science; Director of NSF Urban Systemic Initiative; Executive Director and Project Director of several other Initiatives throughout the US. Her professional affiliations, awards and publications include Presidential Awardee in Mathematics and Science; National Council of Teachers of Mathematics; Oscar Mayer Foods Corporate Engineering Internship. Her legacy includes contributing Author, Reviewer and Consultant for the development of several Mathematics and Science books still used in classrooms today. In May of 2006, she achieved her highest educational honor, Doctor of Education from Nova University.
Clementine’s passions were learning and family. She believed that opportunities are available to everyone through education and learning should be a lifetime pursuit. Her life was dedicated to motivating and empowering others to go after their dreams and never quit, always finish. She lived a life of teaching, learning, and giving to all those in need or open to receive.
Clementine is preceded in death by her parents: Amy Perkins (1994), Roscoe Pruitt (1998), her husband: James Freddy Sherman (1997) and her Beloved Eldest daughter, Yolanda Sherman (1995).
