Commander David N. Sibley , CDR, USN passed peacefully from this life on Thursday July 19, 2012, with his loving family by his side. CDR Sibley was born on February 16, 1934 to Frank and Ione Sibley in Logansport, Indiana, the second born of four children, 2 brothers, Jim and Bill and a sister Susan. Bill is the only surviving immediate family member.
As a young Illinois high school student David always dreamed of joining the US Navy. He was extremely intelligent, very athletic and had a profound sense of humor that followed him to his last breath. In the USNA yearbook David is described as a young man "having an undying love of humor, soft music, good food and long weekends." In all his years, this never changed. All who knew him held him in the highest regard as a true gentleman that earned him the greatest respect that was so readily bestowed upon him by everyone he met.
David received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in 1952 and graduated with a degree in Engineering in 1956. David married Carol Todd in 1956 and as a young married couple they moved all around the United States as demanded by David's service on Nuclear Submarines. They lived in LaGrange Il; Kingston, RI (Susan Gae born Aug 28, 1957); Charleston, SC (Elizabeth Todd born Aug 27, 1959 and Karen born Aug 1,1961); Monterey, CA; Idaho Falls, ID (Andrew Nixon born January 9,1965) and Gales Ferry, CT. In 1970 David obtained an honorable discharge from the USNA and moved his young family to Dallas, Texas to work for Ross Perot, whom he met in the USNA. David used his computer skills later in life in several successful management positions in Bermuda, Maryland and ultimately retiring with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida in Jacksonville.
Through the years, David and Carol grew apart and were divorced in 1994. Shortly thereafter David met Sandra Merrill, whom he referred to as "his one and only". David and Sandy loved each other dearly and had many wonderful and laughter filled years together, travelling, spending time with family, making improvements on the homes they bought and just enjoying their conversations.
David is survived by Daugter Susan Gae and husband Paul Riggs in Spring, Texas (children David and Allison), Daughter Elizabeth Todd and husband Eric Royal in Coppell, Texas (children Christopher, Erin and Blake), Daughter Karen and husband Thomas Carey in Santa Barbara, California and Son Andrew Nixon Sibley and wife Jana in Bluffdale, Texas (children Aubrie and Brendan).
A celebration of David's life will be held at David and Sandy's home on Saturday July 21st from 3 - 6pm. All friends are invited to stop by.
