Don McGuffin was born on May 16, 1935 in Charlotte, North Carolina. His parents moved to Jacksonville, Florida when he was seven years of age and he has been a resident of North Florida ever since. Don graduated from Lee High School in 1953 and then attended The University of Florida on a Track and Field Scholarship. Soon after, he married Iris Cooper with whom he had three children.
Don went to work for Southern Bell/AT&T in 1955 and remained with the company for 36 years until his retirement. In 1964, he moved his family to Middleburg, Florida where he lived until the early 1980s. During this time Don attended First Baptist Middleburg where he was a deacon, song leader, teacher, and youth director.
Don moved back to Jacksonville in 1983 and soon married Lana Paul who had a young son, Ray Whaley. Don and Lana have lived in their home, just off San Jose, ever since. Don loved to work in their yard, planting flowers and fruit trees and keep things well-trimmed and tidy.
With AT&T, Don excelled at his job and soon earned a promotion to a regional management position. For many years he was enlisted in the Florida Army National Guard where he managed communications at Camp Blanding and across the State of Florida. Don continued working as a contractor, even after his retirement from the National Guard.
Don McGuffin is survived by his wife, Lana and his sister, Betty Smith. Additionally, he has two sons, David and Tim, a daughter, Susan McGuffin, and step-son, Ray Whaley. He has six grandchildren, Jamie, Brian, Lauren, Taylor, Bowen, and Chloe in addition to seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Don's honor at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the First Baptist Church, Orange Park, Florida. The family will informally welcome guests beginning at 10:15 a.m.
