Jacksonville – Donald Steere, 93, passed away Wednesday November 22, 2023, with family by his side. Born in Providence, R.I., he was a son of the late Charles H. and Gladys (Brownell) Steere. He was the husband of the late Marianne (Snakenburg) Steere. Mr. Steere was raised in Chepachet, R.I. and attended URI (BA) and UMASS (MA). He served 20 years in Naval Aviation (active/reserve), retiring with the rank of Commander. He also retired from Duval County Schools having taught science at John Gorrie, Southside, Ribault, Fletcher, and DuPont middle schools. He was a member of Hendricks Avenue Church for over 50 years and served as a deacon many years ago. A philanthropist for higher education, he served over 30 years in the Miss Florida Organization sponsoring scholarship competitions in numerous cities throughout Florida. A kind heart and gentle soul, Don found greatness in everyone he met and could never end a conversation without bestowing praise, encouragement, accolades, or a positive affirmation to whomever he spoke. His aviation call sign was “Blue Sky” and was most fitting because no matter the circumstances he maintained a joyful demeanor, cheerful attitude, and love of life. Don leaves behind two daughters, Karen (Joseph) Martin, Wendy (John) Braendle and grandson Michael Veczko, other relatives, and many dear friends. Visitation service will be held at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Legacy Lodge, 4801 San Jose Blvd, in Jacksonville on Wednesday, Dec 6, 2023, from 5-7 pm. Following a private graveside service, the funeral service will be held at Hendricks Avenue Church, 4001 Hendricks Avenue, in Jacksonville on Thursday Dec 7, 2023, at 11 am. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church at habchurch.com.
