Dorothy Overton Ivey

Dorothy Overton Byrum Ivey, 78, longtime resident of Jacksonville, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on November 27, 2012 at the Hadlow Hospice Center for Caring. She was the daughter of the late Jesse E. and Hannah L. (Marshall) Overton. Dot was proceeded in death by her late husbands, Charlie Byrum and Richard E. Ivey.

Dot attended East Carolina University and graduated from Jacksonville University. She was a teacher at San Jose Episcopal Day School for 31 years. Dot was selected as a Who’s Who Among America‘s Teachers: The Best Teachers in America Selected by the Best Students in 2000 and Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers: Honoring Our Nation’s Most Respected Teachers in 2004-2005.

Dot was a very active member of the San Jose Episcopal Church. She was the Director of the Acolytes Program and trained many students to become master acolytes. Dot served on the Rector search committee. She also served as a Lay Reader, Chalice Bearer, Greeter, and was a member of the Women’s Bible Study group.

Surviving Dot are four children, Karen Byrum, Kim Michael Mason (Raymond), Gary L. Byrum (Sharlene) and Richard M. Ivey (John); three grandchildren, Melissa Michael (Patrick), Justin Taylor, and Ryan Mason; five great grandchildren, Palmer Michael Robinson, Darius Taylor, Shanell Taylor, Shania Taylor and Clarissa Taylor; mother-in-law, Rubelle Byrum; sister-in-laws, Ann (Tom) Powell, Shirley Deaver (Don), Patti Phelps (Lou), Cathy McCanless (Walt), Ophelia Taylor (Donald); brother-in-laws, Bob Ivey, Milton Ivey (Joan), Jerry Ivey (Ann), and numerous other relatives and dear friends.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, December 8 at 2:00 pm at San Jose Episcopal Church, 7423 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32217.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to San Jose Episcopal Church.
