My old friend and neighbor, Doug was such a great guy. My condolences to Brenda, Jeff and Mr. And Mrs. Hanes, along with his wife and children. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Doug's high school class of 1978 has lost a special person.  I met Doug in second grade in 1968 and he was full of life than and it sounds like he never stopped enjoying life to the fullist.  We will miss him,

My childhood memories are filled with Dougy stories. I am the person I am today because of him. He helped plant the seed of hope in Jesus Christ when I was 13. At 27 I accepted and surrendered. If it was not for him and his family I could still be lost.

I met Doug on May 13, 1994 at a Jacksonville Suns game that I attended with Matt Chrusciel.  Less than two months into a seven year stay in Florida and already I had another best friend.  It was the beginning of a deep, meaningful and long lasting friendship that I will truly miss.
Iâ€™ve spent the last few days looking at photographs of Doug and I, and reading my diary entries about the times I spent with Doug: going to Florida State games, Daytona 500 qualifying races, 5K runs, weekend visits to his place, Millenium New Yearâ€™s Eve, his 50th birthday party, Doug and MaryEllenâ€™s wedding reception, their visit to Chicago in 2010â€¦  When I moved back to Illinois in 2001 it came at a great cost: visiting Doug was no longer a matter of a crosstown drive. 
The past few days Iâ€™ve been replaying our humorous phone calls and conversations in my mind, so Doug is still with me in spirit.  Talking to him always made us both laugh, and he always cheered me up if I was feeling down. I'm sure many people were uplifted by Doug in that way. 
Dougâ€™s community of friends and loved ones have lost a wise, wonderful man who was always the life of the party.  I wish his life had not ended so soon.  My life will never be the same without my friend Doug.

I just want to say Doug an Mary Ellen have been my life ever since i was born. Im  Matts an De De s daaughter, Taylor. Doug would come over all the time, an id sit back an watch him an my dad always laugh at the stupids stuff together, but have the best time. Doug was my dads best friend. an i am  so sad. but he has left a bhuge memmory in my head, an my family. my moms sends her prayers also <3

Lily and Amy needed the friendship and support you provided during that time. Doug is one of the rare people I have met that truly cares for people and you know it is sincere. To Mary Ellen and Dougie's family,

I have known Doug for about 18 years here in Jacksonville but am from Reading, Pa. meeting when we both worked at Blue Cross back around 1993. The loss of Doug is the loss of a brother for me. We raised our kids together which you should know he was by far the best parent I have ever met and my mentor for the same. Doug lived and thought about his children everyday. He came to my daughter's hospital room when diagnosed at age 4/1/2 with cancer and prayed for her and taught me how to pray for her. She wasn't supposed to live and is now 19 and driving me crazy thank God :  ) Doug was insightful, thoughtful, and so full of life that I feel cheated my friend left  me this early. Doug and I laughed at things that were just between he and I so many times. I think Doug was at a very happy time getting better by the day at this time of his passing which seems to make things harder. You should be so proud of your son who taught me so much.
