Ms. Alvarez was born in New York City on October 27th, 1929, and lived the majority of her life in the Bronx. Edith retired from the Bronx District Attorney’s Office in New York having served as the Executive Secretary for both DA Mario Merola and DA Robert Johnson. She was a proud member of the Communication Workers of America, Local Union 80.
Our mother’s home was always a welcomed, safe refuge for women and children who were victims of abuse, and for many immigrants, and to those friends down on their luck from the sometimes mean streets of the Bronx.
She supported the Salvation Army and other charities yearly and volunteered often, such as during and after the September 11 attacks and then, after retirement, at the local senior center.
We would be remiss not mention our dear Mother’s ability to cuss like a sailor and would often tell us to do as she says not as she does. Mom fiercely protected her cubs, like the time someone called her grandson an ugly name & she gave them a black eye.
Those that sincerely knew and loved her will never forget her beauty, tenaciousness, polished elegance, charm nor her sarcastic wit, or her everlasting love and caring for them.
Edith joins her parents in heaven, Antonio Maria and Mercedes Besiana, beloved 2nd mom, Ana Besiana, her brother Joseph Besiana and granddaughter, Jamie Marie Acevedo.
She is survived by her children Iris Alvarez, Susan Mannion-Alvarez and Raul Alvarez, grandchildren, Andre Acevedo, Daniel Acevedo, Aliana Martinez, Jonathan Alvarez , Jeremey Alvarez and Julian Alvarez, great-grandchildren Kirsten, Alyssa, Andre, Gabriel, Jayden, Anaya, Riley, Luna, Nicolai, and Giana, and great great-grandchildren, Chosen and Kai, along with loving extended family members and dear friends.
Edith requested an intimate funeral sans flowers. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her during her last days. For those who have known Edith, a service celebrating her life will be held at a later date and time.
