Edward Patrick Doherty died on January 16, 2017, surrounded by his adoring family after leading a remarkable and inspiring life. Born February 4, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York, Ed was the son of Mary and Manus Doherty, both from Ireland. He grew up on Rockaway Beach playing basketball, which led to an athletic scholarship from New York University. Within four years, he obtained both a degree in mechanical engineering and notoriety on his team. Because of his athletic and academic achievements, Gibbs Corporation recruited him to Jacksonville as an engineering project manager in the shipbuilding industry, and as a basketball player on the corporate team. Ed then served in the Air Force from 1959 to 1962. Upon returning to Jacksonville, he joined Atlantic Marine Corporation as Production Manager, and eventually became President and CEO until his retirement in 2003. During Ed's tenure, Atlantic Marine delivered a wide range of vessels, including fishing boats, cruise ships, casino boats and research ships. He received the prestigious International Maritime Hall of Fame Award in 1997, and was a member of Southeast Shipyard Association, the Jacksonville Propeller Club, Commodore League, Florida Yacht Club, Timuquana Country Club, Third Friday and Meninak. Preceded in death by his parents and wife Shirley, Ed is survived by his wife of 22 years, Susan Weeks Doherty; his sister, Helen Dorney (Dan); and his children, Michael Doherty (Caren), Susie Putnam (Pete), Sally Hendricks (Clay) and Jimmy Doherty (Susannah). He is also survived by his stepchildren Rand McLaughlin (Maranda), Elizabeth Haddix, and George McLaughlin (Lucie), eighteen grandchildren, and one great grandchild. A memorial service will be held at 2pm Friday, January 20, 2017 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 4129 Oxford Ave., Jacksonville FL 32210. Arrangements are under the care of Hardage-Giddens, 729 Edgewood Ave. S., Jacksonville FL 32205. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association or the Jacksonville Humane Society.
