Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Hurtz, 75, went home to be with our heavenly Father on March 19, 2021. Betty was born in Manhattan, NY on February 21, 1946. She grew up on Staten Island and moved to New Jersey after marrying the love of her life, Barry. In 1974, they relocated to Florida and have called Jacksonville home ever since.
Betty was a proud graduate of Bellevue and Mills School of Nursing, a division of New York University (1967). She was one of the original nurses that helped establish what is now Community Hospice, the group that helped her family during Betty's last days. She worked at Jacksonville Blue Cross in the government programs prior to retiring.
Betty was passionate about her service to multiple ministries at Assumption Catholic Church. She prayed the rosary with those hospitalized at St. Vincent’s Hospital and those imprisoned at Raiford State Prison.
“Mimi” will be remembered for her deep love of her family and the church. She devoted her life to reaching heaven and it brings great comfort knowing that she is there smiling down upon all those she loved.
She is survived by her loving husband, Barry, of fifty years; her daughter, Corrie Labyak (Danny) of Jacksonville, Florida; her son, John Hurtz (Jaime) of Indianapolis, Indiana; and grandchildren Nicholas, Camdyn, Hogan, Jenna and Jaegar.
A funeral mass will be held in Betty’s honor at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 25, 2021, at Holy Family Catholic Church, located at 9800 Baymeadows Road, Jacksonville, FL 32256. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the mass. She is to be laid to rest at the Catholic cemetery of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, located at 11757 Old St. Augustine Road, Jacksonville, FL 32258.
The family would like to thank the staff of the memory care unit at Grand Living At Tamaya for the exceptional care they provided.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to Alzheimers Association (act.alz.org.)
