

Esther Shippey Clayton, age 96, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 21, 2022. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Bobby Reams Clayton Sr, her parents, Lovie Louise Easter and Joseph Shippey Sr, and her brothers, Joseph Shippey Jr and Lawrence Shippey. She is survived by her children, Diane Waldrip, Jan Clayton Pagratis, Thomas Clayton, Lorraine Haataia, and her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, as well as her nieces and nephews.
Esther graduated from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, GA. After moving to Jacksonville, Florida with her parents, she worked in accounting at Florida National Bank Holding Company. She retired from the bank and began her second career working diligently with her husband, Bobby, at their appraisal business. After they both retired a second time, she and Bobby spent many happy days at their second home on Powder Horn Mountain in North Carolina. She was a very talented seamstress and loved sewing for her family and friends. She also learned basket weaving, upholstery, and was an active member of a local bowling league. She was very involved with the Jacksonville Garden Club and happy to host a meeting when called upon to serve. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church (aka Aspire Church) where she taught Sunday School classes and Vacation Bible School, as well as serving on various boards and committees. She studied with Bible Study Fellowship for well over a decade and gained a deep understanding of God’s Word. She was a trained leader for the BSF Children’s program and spent endless hours preparing age-appropriate Bible lessons. She was involved with several charities, such as Meals on Wheels and served food at the Salzbacher Center. Esther was a faithful Christian, and served the Lord all her days.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at 1:00 pm by Hardage-Giddens at Oaklawn Cemetery, 4801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207. PH 904.737.7171.
