Frances Roberts Decker, 99, daughter of George Culver Roberts and Joyce Edna Griffin Roberts, was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on May 3, 1926, and fell asleep in this life to awake in glory and life eternal with the Lord on July 20, 2025.
From her earliest childhood days as a member of the Sunshine Sunday School class at Main Street Baptist Church until she drew her last breath, our mother had an unwavering faith in the love of God, the grace of our Savior Jesus Christ and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. She was persistent and devoted to prayers for her children and their families as well as interceding for friends, neighbors, her community and country. Her devotion to our Savior and to His Holy Mother was the hallmark of her life.
Our mother was an officer and member in many civic and community organizations including the Daughters of the American Revolution, garden clubs, womans clubs, PTA, church and community organizations. She enjoyed a full and exciting life traveling to virtually every corner of the globe and the United States from coast to coast. She retired as librarian with the Government Printing Office where she made many valuable contributions and indulged her love of books.
Frances, or "Granny Franny" as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren lovingly called her, loved her family and treated each one of her children as an "only child." She inspired everyone in our family as a polymath devoted to learning in every field of human endeavor starting with the Bible, American history, politics, the arts and sciences. She was truly a Renaissance woman who believed everything she learned would deepen her love of the Lord and understanding of the Bible.
Our mother was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Mildred Roberts Ormerod, her son, Stephen Francis Decker, and husband, Andrew Joseph Decker, Jr., to whom she was married for 55 years. She is survived by her children, Andrew Joseph Decker, III (Rose Mason Decker), Marsha Decker Powers (Ernest D. Powers), Michael Roberts Decker, (Cynthia Decker) and Anne Decker Gorman; grandchildren, Andrew Joseph Decker, IV (Jeannette Cassandra Decker), Rose Decker Chauncey (Anthony Wade Chauncey), Patrick Michael Andrew Decker (Blair Christina Decker), Stephen Francis Decker, II, Kathleen Frances Gorman McClung (Marshall Thomas McClung), Liam Timothy Gorman; and great-grandchildren, Andrew Joseph Decker V, Eva Rose Decker, Lyla Roberts Folsom, Noah Landon Chauncey, Mason Paul Chauncey, Decker Anthony Chauncey, Rose Lilliston Chauncey, Quinton Alexander Proveaux, Pierce Austin Proveaux, and Parker Anthony Proveaux, Eloise Grace Decker, Madeline Elizabeth Decker, Brooks Patrick Decker and Graves Francis McClung.
A funeral service will be at Saint Mark's Episcopal Church, 4129 Oxford Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida 32210, at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 26, 2025, in the church with interment immediately following the service at Oaklawn Cemetery, 4801 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, Florida 32207.
