Fred Espare Abboud Sr., the self-proclaimed “Mayor of Brooklyn” has passed on to his home in heaven on September 9th, 2015. On that evening, Fred was surrounded by family and friends to bring him comfort and tender our goodbyes. Our comfort is supported knowing that he will be resting with family members he’s missed. Preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Libby Abboud and his adored wife Sylvia, he will surely be with people that he so loved. For the rest of us, the privileged people that knew him will be remembering the wonderful man that he was. He always made everyone feel like family.
Fred graduated from Robert E. Lee High School here in Jacksonville then attended SWI in Lafayette, Louisiana. Shortly after starting school, Fred decided to serve his country and joined the US Navy. There he proudly served as a boson mate during the Korean War. After his service, Fred joined his father in their family business, Abboud’s Grocery and Market. For over 60 years he supported his community and was recognized by the local churches and was awarded the “Emancipation Proclamation Award” for the service he provided in the Brooklyn/Mixontown community in Jacksonville. His customers were like family to Fred and he treated them with respect and love which they returned to him tenfold.
Some of his greatest joys came from spending time with his family near and far. He always loved seeing everyone together and spending time with all. Whether it was a holiday weekend in St. Augustine, a crawfish boil in a backyard or a simple dinner get together, Fred never realized those times also enriched our lives.
He is survived by his children Fred Abboud Jr. (companion Frank Morino); Pam Abboud (companion Chris Gaddoni); and Angie Lavarias (Benny). He also leaves behind his beloved granddaughter, Lauren Lavarias. Additionally, his brothers Tom Abboud (Mary); Donald Abboud (Mary); and sister Darlene Toney (late Tom).
The family will receive friends and family on September 11, 2015 at Hardage Giddens Funeral Home at 4115 Hendricks Avenue. His funeral service will be held at Lakewood Presbyterian Church at 1pm at 2001 University Boulevard West with Reverend Vickie Bossuot, officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery at 4535 Main Street, Jacksonville FL 32206.
