Henry was born on the west side of St. Paul, Minnesota in the middle of the Great Depression. The youngest of five and two foster brothers, he was a quiet, gentle, and caring soul. He would work in the family garden and spent hours looking after his ailing grandmother.
He had a natural ear for music. He played trumpet in his high school band. He also excelled on the accordion, as was fashionable in those years. He played polkas, waltzes, and pop for the German and Polish weddings in the St. Paul area, and in a trio at the local dance halls. Henry loved his country and served in the Air Force during the Korean War. Later, he served in the Air National Guard Reserve.
In 1952, Henry married the love of his life, Rose Mary Zumwalde, and together they built a 66-year marriage. He was a gentle and loving father to one daughter, Joanne. During that time, he worked for his brother-in-law at Kopp Construction as a cabinet maker.
He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2005, but lived his remaining years never complaining, always with a twinkle in his eye and a funny little quip to say.
Henry is survived by his loving wife, Rose Mary Kennedy, daughter Joanne Mancuso, and granddaughter Mary Rose Mancuso.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry James Kennedy Sr and Anna Kennedy; sister, Leonora (Herbert) Roeller, brother Daniel (Loretta) Kennedy, sister Loretta (Charles) Kopp, and sister Audrey (Richard) Motzko, as well as foster brothers, Clarence (Connie) Frankel and Harold (Gloria) Schmit.
Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at 10:30 am at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Middleburg, Florida. Interment with military honors will be held graveside at Jacksonville National Cemetery at 1:30 pm.
