On Saturday, February 26, 2022, Howard Cash went home to be with Jesus. Dad lived all 92 1/2 years with a true zeal for life. One of dad‘s fondest memories was getting baptized on February 12, 1941 at Franklin St., Baptist Church in Louisville Kentucky.
Dad was passionate about his love for Jesus, his family and his church family. Howard grew up in Louisville Kentucky where he attended Male High School. He joined the Air Force in 1946 and was a World War II veteran. In 1949 he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth on March 17, 1949 and this month they would have celebrated 73 years of marriage. Together they have three children, Richard Cash (Cindy) Beverly Perkins (Joe) who live in Louisville Kentucky, and Susie McCauley(Raymond) who lives in Neptune Beach Florida. He has five grandchildren, Leann Cash, Leslie Cash, Kelly Brinke, Ricky McCauley, and Ryan Mccauley. He has four great grandchildren, Aiden Brinke, Mason Brinke, Hunter McCauley and Indie Mccauley.
Dad began attending college on the G.I. Bill and also around this time began driving his 1940 Ford with his brother Bill at the Jeffersonville Sportsdrome and other local tracks on Friday nights.
Dad began his L&N railroad career in 1956 and he retired in 1988.
Dad’s bucket list was completed with many adventurous accomplishments. He was a certified single engine pilot, certified scuba diver, surfer, white water rafter, snow skier, parachutist, race car driver, wonderful father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Dad loved to talk to people either on the phone or in person telling them many stories about growing up in downtown Louisville. He remembers the flood of 1937 when his family moved into the basement of a church until the waters receded. Dad always loved his family and envisioned everyone being together and was instrumental in starting the Cash annual family reunions and this still continues today. Dad enjoyed exercising, while living with heart disease for over 40 years, he loved his Cardiac Rehab at Saint Vincents hospital for over 20 years, his Cardiologist Dr Robert Luke. He enjoyed his retired group of “L&N ers” that met monthly, American Legion-Post 88, the Lions Club, NARVRE, Jacksonville Scubnauts, and dad was an active member of Christ Church Senior Adults group.
