Our sweet, beloved husband and father, Hoyle (“Bobby”) Alexander Buie, rested in the arms of Jesus, his Lord and Savior, on August 3, 2025 at Haven Hospice, Orange Park, Florida. At the time of his passing, he was a long-time resident of Green Cove Springs, Florida where he lived with his lifetime sweetheart and wife of 70 years, Sandra (“Sandy”) Touchton Buie.
He was 94 years young…as he would claim!
Hoyle was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, to Alexander and Ada Buie. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in September of 1949 and served during the Korean War in Alaska. He was honorably discharged in February of 1953. He lived in El Paso, Texas, learning the art of welding and worked on oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. After a short visit home to Wilmington, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida where he met his beautiful bride, Sandra. He worked as a welder/shipfitter for Gibbs and Jacksonville Shipyards while attending various trade schools and earned the equivalency of an Associates Degree. Approximately 1968, Hoyle joined the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers and contracted with Vinnell Corporation and the Department of Defense during the Vietnam War. He served at Cam Ranh Bay obtaining the rank equivalent to a Captain of the United States Army. He obtained top nuclear security clearance with the US and loved his work as a nuclear boilermaker traveling the world to many exciting locations such as Scotland and the Ascension Islands. He also worked in the Dominican Republic supervising the building of boilers and the power plant under Flame Refactory. He joked the job would have only lasted 6 months if the workers didn’t take so many siestas!!
While living in Jacksonville, Florida, he pledged as a “Brother”, 32nd degree, at the Most Worshipful Union Grand Lodge of Florida. Once retired and settled in Green Cove Springs, Hoyle began exploring his creative side making yard animal critters and helium tank piggy banks. He and Sandra traveled throughout the southeast to many craft shows and his creations became quite a hit and he absolutely loved it!! When vision problems arose and they were no longer able to travel he began exploring his great love for gardening! He was an avid gardener up until his death and had gained a wealth of knowledge of which he gladly shared with his loved ones…along with the fruits of his labor! He also reveled in his “dad book of jokes” as we called all of his dry jokes and he would laugh the hardest at the telling!
He is predeceased by his beloved in-laws, Jasper and Eula Touchton, Raymond Touchton, Peggye Bazal, Charles and Judith Lowe; his loving grandmother, Theodosia Buie; brothers, Hal Buie and Joseph Buie; cherished granddaughter, Kelli; and his parents, Alexander and Ada Buie.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra, three beloved daughters, Scheryl Strickland (James), Stephanie Roper (Denis), and Barbara Holder (Wendall-deceased); 4 grandsons, Christopher, Justin, Matthew, and Jason; 2 granddaughters, Laura and Shannon; nine great-grandchildren; 2 sister-in-laws, Betty and Wanda; 6 nephews and 5 nieces; great-nephews and great-nieces, and extended family and friends.
Visitation for Hoyle will be held Saturday, August 16, 2025, from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM with a funeral service following from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM. A committal service will also follow from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM at Hardage-Giddens Greenlawn Cemetery, 4300 Beach Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
