Dr. Indira Gopal, 86, passed away surrounded by loved ones in Ponte Vedra, Florida on February 15, 2024. She was born to Savithramma and Venkatesha Iyer in Andhra, India on January 18, 1938. She married Dr. Kris Gopal on March 17, 1968 in Bengaluru, India.
Indira was a devoted wife to Kris and mother to Murali and Rajesh. Through her warm embrace and wide-open heart was also a cherished mom to many more. She was a trusted confidant for her nine siblings, extended family both locally and abroad, and countless friends. She was affectionately known as Patti by her five grandchildren, each of which she loved beyond measure. She built all these relationships with loving intention. She nourished them. She was grateful for them. Through her example, she taught us to do the same. That will be her enduring legacy.
She valued engagement and conversation and could effortlessly spark meaningful discussions with anyone passing by as well as participate in social or silly conversations with the same level of ease. Endlessly eager to learn about others and their interests, and to share her own experiences, her inquisitive nature was one of her most endearing traits. It was her genuine adoring curiosity about her loved ones that drew us near, making us feel both seen and heard. She loved us unconditionally and was quick to offer beautiful words of encouragement and affirmation.
She was a steadfast advocate for education. First in her family to attend medical school, she fearlessly left her home in India to pursue her career in America. She humbly became a double board-certified physician and mother to two young sons in a foreign country yet joked that her most challenging adjustment during this phase was having to wear shoes all day.
Her love for learning stretched far beyond the confines of medicine and into the realm of self-awareness. One of her main areas of focus was self-actualization with the goal of continually growing her own self. With this life-long commitment to growth, she became a wealth of wisdom for us all.
She loved walking to her favorite bench to chat with neighbors on sunshine-drenched mornings, fresh sugar cookies lovingly baked by her granddaughters, listening to her sons and grandchildren playing music, and long talks with friends and family on the phone. She took great pride in watching her two sons grow into successful and caring individuals, had abundant love for her pets, and prioritized family over everything else. She was enormously generous and one of the kindest individuals we all knew.
She was the glue that held us all together and is deeply missed.
To honor her wishes, no memorial service will be held.
