
James Edwin Abercrombie Jr., beloved husband, son, father, grandfather, and uncle passed away peacefully encircled by the love and prayers of his family on November 6, 2014 after complications from surgery. A Jacksonville native, Jim was born on May 23, 1939. He attended Hendricks Avenue Elementary and Landon High School, class of 1957, where he played football. He then graduated in 1961 from Wake Forest University where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and was the ACC table tennis champion. Following college Jim served in the Florida Air National Guard. As a successful businessman and current President, Jim invested over 50 years with Abercrombie Insurance Agency. He enjoyed working beside his father and son. Jim was a member of Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church where he coached basketball for many years. As a sports enthusiast, he supported his Wake Forest Demon Deacons and Florida Gators. He enjoyed country music concerts, and taught and participated in country line dancing. He enjoyed fishing and motorcycle riding at the lake. He served as head timer at many area age group swim meets. Throughout the years, Jim maintained his love for the game of table tennis. He actively played at the Mary Singleton center in Jacksonville, and participated in both the Jacksonville Senior Games and the Jacksonville City Tournaments. He enjoyed accompanying his wife on outdoor nature adventures and proudly watching his children and grandchildren participate in their sporting events. He is preceded in death by his parents, James Edwin and Evelyn Still Abercrombie, an infant sister, and nephew, Bret Howell Andrews. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mildred Bishop Abercrombie; son, James E. Trey Abercrombie, III (Linda) of Jacksonville; three daughters, Jill Wilby (Martyn) of Gainesville, Emery Noles (Jay) of Jacksonville, and Erin Jones (Zell) of Jacksonville; a sister, Andrea Jane Andrews (Clyde); niece Melanie Andrews; grandnephew, Noah Clyde Andrews; and nine adoring grandchildren: Mallory and Melinda Abercrombie; Kendal and Mason Wilby; Grady and Ella Noles; Jack, Hayden and Branson Jones. The family will receive friends from five thirty o clock until seven o clock in the evening on Monday, November 10, 2014 at The Oaklawn Chapel. Graveside services will be held at twelve thirty o clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Oaklawn Cemetery. Following the graveside services, a memorial service will be held at two o clock at Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church with Dr. Kyle Reese officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Jim s name to Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church, 4001 Hendricks Avenue, 32207.
