

He was born on September 17, 1935 in Binghamton, New York to Mary and Francis J. O'Brien. Jim and his wife, Karol, both graduated from Binghamton Central High School in 1953. He attended Saint Bonaventure University and graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1957. He went to work for US Steel in Cleveland, Ohio as part of their graduate industrial engineering program and worked there for 12 years. Mr. O'Brien returned to New York and worked for Xerox in Webster for 32 years. He raised his 3 children in Penfield, New York and spent many summers boating on the Finger Lakes. After retiring, he and his wife moved to northeast Florida to be near their children and grandchildren. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Penfield, New York and Holy Family Catholic Church in Jacksonville, Florida. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army.
He was predeceased by his first born son James Francis O'Brien, Jr. He leaves behind his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 58 years, Karol F. O'Brien. In addition, he is survived by his daughter, Kaley O. Buchanan (Timothy), son, Scott T. O'Brien and his cherished grandchildren, Perri O'Brien and Alex and Mitch Buchanan of Jacksonville, Florida. He also leaves his sister Sandy Guy (Bob) of Binghamton, New York. He was the patriarch of the family and will be missed dearly by his family.
A visitation will be held on Friday, February 6, 2015 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM with a funeral service at 12:00 PM at the Hardage-Giddens Greenlawn Funeral Home, 4300 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
Donations may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Suite 100, Jacksonville, Florida 32257 in lieu of flowers.
