Jan met the love of her life, Theodore Oscar Olsen III, while he was stationed at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station in Cumberland County, Maine. They married on September 30, 1967, and shared 56 wonderful years together. As a devoted Navy wife, Jan faithfully supported Theodore throughout his 30-year military career, moving where duty called and creating a home wherever they were stationed. After his retirement from the U.S. Navy, they settled permanently in Jacksonville, Florida, in the home they built together in 1975.
Jan was a gifted cosmetologist, preschool teacher, and art teacher, and she also served as a Girl Scout leader. Her creativity and patience touched many lives, whether through her work as a basket weaver, her love for cats, or her passion for flower gardening. She found joy in baking and was known for her generous spirit — always giving gifts and doing kind things for others simply because she loved to give.
Jan is survived by her children Ted (Danielle) Olsen of Jacksonville, Florida, and Teresa (William) Surrency of Bryceville, Florida; her grandchildren Cameron (Morgan) Olsen, Matthew Surrency, Amber Surrency, Gabrielle Olsen, Chase Olsen, and Luke Surrency; and her great-grandchildren M.J. Duncanson and Elena Olsen.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32218. Guests are asked to arrive by 1:45 PM for the funeral procession to the pavilion.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an organization of your choice in Jan’s memory.
Jan’s life was a reflection of love and devotion, and every person who crossed her path felt her kindness. Her hands created art, her heart nurtured others, and her spirit will forever remain a gentle light in the lives of all who knew and loved her.
