Our beloved Mom, Joan Gast, gracefully transitioned to her heavenly home on August 15, 2025, after a life filled with love and joy. She was a vibrant 86 years young. Born on March 22, 1939, in Gary, Indiana, Joan entered the world alongside her twin brother, Jon, as the cherished daughter of Fred and Betty Wittenberg. She was welcomed into a loving family with her older brother Ed and later, younger brother Bob, growing up in the warm embrace of Valparaiso, Indiana.
After completing her schooling in Valpo, Joan attended Indiana University where her passion for singing blossomed during her time on campus. Joan was active with her sorority, trained vocally with the delightful “Belles of Indiana” where she had the honor to travel to Europe to perform with the acclaimed Victor Borge and was asked to join Bob Hope on the USO tour. She completed her undergraduate studies and in 1960, she married her high school sweetheart, Carroll “Buzz” Gast, and together they shared a beautiful journey of love for 61 years. They created a nurturing home on Merritt Island, Florida, filled with laughter and unforgettable memories, while Dad dedicated his career to the Space Center for 35 years.
Mom's greatest joy was her family. She poured her heart into raising her four wonderful children: Lisa (Jacksonville, FL), Larry (Charlotte, NC, Deceased 2021), Darrell (Atlanta, GA), and David (Jacksonville, FL). Her grandchildren, Austin & Jake, Kendall & Griffin, Cody, Merritt, & Marlo, held a special place in her heart, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
With unwavering devotion to her family, Joan also pursued a fulfilling career in Elementary Education. For nearly 30 years, she served as a Learning Disabilities Special Education teacher at Mila and Challenger 7 Elementary schools in Brevard County. Her dedication and passion for teaching transformed the lives of countless children, earning her recognition as a Master Senior Consultant for the McGraw-Hill Publishing Company.
In retirement, Joan and Buzz embraced new adventures, traveling the world, volunteering, enjoying countless games of Bridge, and hosting themed gatherings with dear friends. She returned to teaching and consulting for a few years at St. Teresa Catholic School in Titusville to wrap up a wonderful, giving career. Joan lovingly cared for our grandmother and our Uncle Duke during their later years, embodying her nurturing spirit. Her passion for genealogy brought her joy as she worked alongside Dad to compile family histories, sharing the stories with loved ones.
After Dad passed away in 2021, Mom Joan will forever inspire us, her extended family, and countless friends. She will be deeply missed by all of us—each and every day.
