Mom loved seeing Orion with Leo during the week during the Christmas break.

There’s a beautiful and popular song by Seph Schlueter called "Counting My Blessings" that has been on my mind for weeks. 

Reflecting on Mom's life, I’m reminded of the countless blessings she bestowed upon us—her unwavering support, her gentle guidance, and her boundless love. Like the song says, 
"The more that I look in the details, the more of Your goodness I find.  Counting my blessings, knowing I can’t count that high.”

She walked through life with quiet strength, dignity, and a gentle beauty that radiated from within. She was the best mom and granny one could ever ask for. She loved every one of us, her heart was generous, her spirit unbreakable, and her smile unforgettable. Whether she was offering words of wisdom, a comforting touch or simply being present, she made life better—fuller, warmer, and more meaningful.

More than that, she was my best friend. She listened without judgment, loved without condition, and stood by me through every step of life. She was my mentor—teaching me not just how to live, but how to live well. By example, she taught me to be more selfless. I wouldn’t be the wife, mother, Mayma, caregiver, friend, or person I am without her influence. I certainly wouldn’t have earned the endearing title “Nurse Ratched” without her skills. (The drill sergeant part comes from Dad—lol.) 

Again, I count my blessings to have had the best Mom, whom I will cherish forever, to infinity.  

You were the sweetest of all—and you were worth it.

Reflecting on the life of a truly remarkable woman—Joann. Mom. Granny. Gigi. A woman who lived 91 years with a quiet kind of heroism—the kind that doesn’t seek the spotlight but quietly changes lives all the same. 

She was the devoted wife of a U.S. Army veteran, many years she carried the weight of service on the home front. Every couple of years, moving the family, building homes from scratch, and raising seven children, often on her own, while her husband served far from home.
 
We often speak of those in uniform as heroes—and they are. But there is another kind of hero, too. Women like my grandmother, who served not in combat zones, but in kitchens and living rooms, laundry rooms and bedtime stories. Who gave of themselves daily—not for recognition, but because that’s simply who they were.

She was also adventurous, funny, and dependable in ways that often went unnoticed. She wasn’t just a passenger on those many flights with Poppy across the country—she was an incredible co-pilot. I’m reminded of the time she calmly assisted with a mid-air fuel transfer during a flight to San Francisco. Cool, focused, and completely unshaken. That’s who she was—someone who rose to every occasion, quietly and completely. One of those trips, I was just a baby,  she even took off her slip so I could use it as a “soothing blanket”. 

She gave so much of herself to her family, and we are all better for it. Her steady, gentle presence will always be felt in our hearts.

Granny,  Thank you for being the co-pilot of so many lives—especially mine.

Your strength anchored our family.
Your love lifted us. 
And your quiet sacrifices shaped generations.

You will always be our hero.
Our comfort. Our joy.
And our favorite person to fly with—on earth, and now, in spirit.

I moved in with Granny and Poppy for a period of . I would sit with Poppy and keep him company, and Poppy would tell me, “Jo is so smart. Do you know how smart you have to be to move all over the world and raise seven kids?” I loved hearing him talk about her. Granny’s strength was seen by all of us and her nurturing love has shown us how to raise our families.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Joann for over 50 years and the honor of having her in our home for the last 3 ½ years.
What I remember most is how important family was to her. As a young adult, I saw how she made sure family was together and that the holidays were always joyous occasions with great food. She made sure every person felt welcomed & included.
While she became a part of our home years; family was just as important. She loved the visits from her children,  grandchildren & her sister. She was kind to everyone. 
I will miss her, especially in the mornings. It did not matter if it was 4:00 in the morning getting ready to go fishing. Mom would wake up, smiling to the smell of coffee. She loved coffee time, any time. She loved fish.
Joann, Granny, Gigi, absolutely loved children. The summer was full with Stella & Leo coming all the time. During quiet times she would say, where is my little boy Leo? He needs to come over more. We all were so lucky to have her in our lives. Even our little dog, Dexter, who she claimed as her dog, brought her much pleasure & smiles. She truly was a great woman.

Four generations of women shaped by your love, strength and support. We are who we are because of you.

Granny,
It’s hard to put into words how much we already miss you. I miss your compassion, your gentle kindness, and the way your little remarks always made me laugh. Even hearing you talk to yourself would bring a smile to my face. You had a quiet strength that held this family together, and your love reached every corner of it.

You weren’t just my Granny — you were Stella’s GiGi too. You were a safe, comforting presence for both of us. Every bit of love you gave to me, and to her, will stay with us always.

We will miss you deeply and love you always.

Granny/Gigi, Alexander Richard and her Alex. I believe this was the day I surprised her and she said “Alex is here!! My Alex is here!!”

My beautiful granny. Where do I begin? You were the best granny ever. I miss spending every weekend with you. I miss wearing your mumus. I miss going to lunch and Kmart with you and poppy. I miss going to your house Christmas Eve. But most of all I miss you and all the love you’d give. Thank you for being the best granny and loving me so much. I love you so much my granny.

When I think of my mother throughout my life I will hear her voice echoing in the memories I hold in my heart.  Her smile would light up a room.  She was caring, loving, kind, funny and compassionate.  Her love for her family and friends was unconditional.  She taught all of her children throughout her life to love one another and she set that example by what she did for us and with us.  I will always love and miss her but I am comforted to know that I will see her again one day.
