With the passing of our friend John Dinsmore, some things of note need mentioning. John was an active and participative CGSC member for years, sailing his Columbia 26 LIBRIUM. He was one of the first to invite me sailing when I was joining the club. Like many of the "can do generation" John had much knowledge on many topics based on first-hand experience, somewhat typical of the era, I guess. One was the subject of lightning which began with John being lightning struck! On one of the Pacific islands John, a Marine, was tasked with unrolling a wire from a reel up a hill to a forward outpost and connecting a phone there. Upon doing so, and putting phone to ear, lightning struck the wire somewhere on the hill and followed it to the phone with a huge jolt to Mr. Dinsmore. His next recollection was of hearing very distant voices of the corpsmen discussing his case. He listened awhile to the far-away voices while they checked for wounds thinking, as he did, that he'd been mortar struck. Soon John meekly advised them that he was "on the other side". They checked and discussed further, and countered that he had no visible wounds and was still with them. He soon recovered with no long term ill effects, but from that point on John read and studied lightning as a lifelong research hobby, sort of, becoming much an expert on it and never losing interest. Folks with lightning questions could direct them to him, and be assured of getting a good take on it. One visible application of lightning control/direction was that when LIBRIUM was moored, a large port and starboard battery cable connected the upper shrouds to large underwater steel plates. Such was a practical and inexpensive method of shunting lightning to water, born of first-hand experience!
Another manifestation of John's keen practicality was when we as a work crew were toiling in the heat and dirt on the strip work area. Don't recall exactly what the task was, maybe casting steel/concrete moorings, but one disgruntled laborer began griping mightily about "all those members here who never do anything to help, and we're always the same ones out here having to do this hot grunt work". John heard the man out patiently, then opined that while what was said was true, and it would indeed be better if more folks pitched in. However, such as it was, if they paid their dues, moorings fees, etc., he'd love them because without which he probably couldn't even afford to be there. It was kind and sage advice from a good and practical man. All was OK after that, as we worked on; I never forgot the great lesson and am sure the others didn't either. John Dinsmore will be sorely missed.

I had the honor to be hired by John in 1972.
During my employment interview all he talked about was my suit.  I then noticed that he and I were wearing identical suits.
I worked for him during my first three years at Southern Bell. He was a great leader, teacher and most of all friend.  I can never fully express my gratitude for his confidence in me.
I will always admire his memory.

The whole free world owes a debt to the young men of his calibar.  He was a true hero.  He was the brother figure to me in my younger years and he will always have a place in my heart.

Just a short note to extend my sincere condolence, along with that of my wife, Judy, to all of John's family. I went to work for Southern Bell under John's direct supervision in 1964 in Jacksonville. During that time, both he and Dorothy became what would turn out to be life-long friends. John has always held a special place in my heart, as he was like a second father to me!

John, rest well with your beloved wife, Dorothy, under God's protective wings!!!

Your Pop just moved to another address, but his memory will be in your heart forever.
