Joseph Collin Persaud was born in Guyana, South America, February 14, 1959, the son of the late William Persaud and Yvonne Verasammy-Persaud. Joseph was the brother of 8 siblings, Cheryl, Frankie (deceased), Desiree, Aubrey (deceased), William (deceased), Sandra, Matthew (deceased) and Diana.
Growing up in Guyana with his siblings and cousins everyday was filled with fun and adventures. The highlight of their year was visiting Granny Emily every Easter Sunday in Turquin, Guyana, Yvonne (his mom) would pile her 8 kids in her Morris Oxford (PY 256) and pick up her 2 sisters, each with their 3 kids of their own, and they would head to Granny’s. When they arrived, there would be a total of 3 adults and 14 grandchildren pouring out of a Morris Oxford on Easter Sunday. Additionally, it was tradition for someone to climb the coconut tree in granny’s yard that hung over the trench, of which somebody was going swimming by falling out the coconut tree during the process. It was always the highlight of Easter Sunday with Granny Emily. Collin spent most of his underage years living with Albert and Agnes Jairam and family.
Collin attended Sacred Heart RC School Georgetown where he was known to excel at math and reading. With his siblings, he was an enthusiastic member of the Sea Scouts, where he developed his love of the ocean and sailing. He was also an Altar Boy in the family's local Catholic Church. Collin's siblings remember him as Granny's "handsome little tweet boy", whose quiet and thoughtful demeanor made him a favorite of many adults in his life.
