Judy was born in Philadelphia, PA on the 26th of May 1947 to USN Captain J.S. Elkins, Jr. and Carol O'Neal Elkins. After calling several locations such as Virginia, Florida, Hawaii and Spain home during her life as part of a naval family, she decided that Athens, GA was the place to settle in and make a life for her family. Judy was a proud graduate of The University of Georgia after studying abroad in Munich, Germany through the University of Maryland. Judy had a wonderful career as Director of Telephone Services for The University of Georgia and retired after 25 years of service. She was an active member of The First Presbyterian Church in Athens, participated in numerous philanthropic organizations and had a passion for gardening, taking walks in her neighborhood and spending time with her family.
Judy is survived by her two sons and their families, Evan Williams Howell (Melissa) and James Hudson Howell Jr. (Melinda), her grandchildren: William Howell, Sam Howell, Jay Howell and Reed Howell, her sisters: Carol Large (James) and Lynn Griffin (William), and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services and a celebration of her life will be held at 10:00am, June 4, 2018 at The First Presbyterian Church of Athens, 185 East Hancock Dr., Athens, GA 30601. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Community Hospice and Palliative Care, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257 or The First Presbyterian Church of Athens.
