Leonard was born on Feburary 15th, 1933 in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated from Medford High School, Home of the Mustangs. He then passed College equivalency test which is equivalent to modern Associates Degree. Leonard was trained in Sales, Marketing, Publishing, Management, Computer and
office automation. His start to employment and his working career was at his fathers gas station - Jenny Gas Station on Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington Massachusetts where he learned the values of
hard honest work and customer service from his father Harold Charnley Slack.
After serving honorably in the United States Marines Corps for 8 years, Leonard he went on to work for Remington Rand- Sperry Rand Corporation; The Yellow Pages advertising division; Wang Computer Corporation; and the CPT Corporation. Continuing on with his own business enterprises, Leonard worked on "What to see and do in Jacksonville and the First Coast"; "The Dining Guide to Florida's First Coast"; "The Guest Advantage to Florida's First Coast". With each of these enterprises, he did everything from sales, marketing, editorial, layout, publication, and distribution and customer relations. These unique publications helped visitors and locals discover the expansive variety of how to fully experience everything in Northeast Florida had to offer in the way of dining, entertainment, sports, and historical sites. After working since his teenage years, Len Slack retired at the age of 82.
Leonard was involved with many organizations over the years such as the Jacksonville
Jaycees and others, his proudest affiliation was with the Semper Fidelis(Semper Fi) society of
Jacksonville. He was a past president and cherished the idea of Marines helping up and
coming future Marines, currently enlisted, former Marines as well as other servicemen and
women and the community at large.
The most cherished part of his life which he was most dedicated and devoted to was his family.
He was the father of four sons: Colin Jay Slack (deceased during military service in the United States Air Force in 1975), Kevin Terence Slack (Ponte Vedra, Florida), Brett Charnley Slack (Deerfield Beach, Florida), and Patrick Slack (Jacksonville, Florida). He is also survived by his seven grandchildren whom he loved with all his heart; Clayton Charnley Slack, Amber Jaye Slack, Kylie Lynne Slack, Meaghan Jo Slack, Rachael Anne Slack, Zoey Grace Slack, Jenna Rose Slack - they were and are the joy and light of his life. Other loved ones include: Rita Ann Slack (Kevin’s wife); brothers, Harold Terance Slack (Terry), Roger Sherbourne Slack, and their wives Joanne and Sandy; as well as his many nieces and nephews and countless friends. The passion of his life was his children and grandchildren, to whom he was totally
dedicated and devoted.
He was a Boston sports enthusiast, always ready to cheer for, watch, and talk about his Boston Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics, and Patriots. He was especially excited about the Red Sox finally winning the World Series.
