Lewis H. Caton, Jr., age 87, was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania to Lewis H Caton, Sr. and Mary Erma Caton. He went home to be with the lord on November 15, 2023 in Jacksonville, Florida.
At an early age he met the love of his life, Wilma, in a small church in Pennsylvania. Several months later they were married in that same church and thus began a journey together that lasted over 68 years.
His passion was always education which he pursued throughout his lifetime. Having earned his doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh, he taught at various schools and colleges in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New Jersey, and Florida. Prior to his retirement he served as Chief of Training for the City of Jacksonville under Mayor John Delaney.
Lewis was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Teacher in the Children’s Department. He also spent several years as a volunteer at the Mayo Clinic.
His love of the mountains involved trips each year to North Carolina or Tennessee always with grandchildren who seen developed that same love. A humble man with a huge heart, he was never one to promote himself. To quote his grandson, “in his silence he left a profound impression on my life; his actions carried a weigh that words could never match.”
Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Mary Erma Caton, his brother Thomas, and his children Donna Caton and Daniel Caton. He is survived by his wife Wilma Caton and his daughter Patricia Henschel (Peter); his grandchildren Darryl Markle (Janell), Sean Caton (Rachael), Bradley Markle (Christina), Shannon Caton-Whitaker (Isaac), Erin Bascomb and Jennifer Bascomb; great grandchildren Donovan and Liam Markle, Grahf Caton, and Coraline Markle.
A visitation and funeral service for Lewis will be held Wednesday, November 22, 2023 from 11:00 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 11801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32223.
