Lu was such a good guy. I can't tell you how glad I am that we finally met, I have lived in the neighborhood for years and just met "Chief" a few months ago. I feel like I was cheated out of the friendship of this wonderful man far too long. Everytime I see a piece of chocolate, I think of Lu and his love of chocolate. I will miss him dearly. He was a good friend. I just wish it would have lasted longer. You will be missed friend.

Chief Powell was a positive influence to the W.S.P.D. family and realized that patrol officers were the backbone of the department. He had been our Chief for less than a week and one night at 1:00 A. M. on midnight shift I had a unruly DWI and I heard a voice say, " Officer do you need assistance ? " I turned to look behind me and there stood Chief Powell. He took care of his men and was very fair in their treatment.
To his family and friends I am so sorry for your loss and have you in my thoughts and prayers.

Chief Powell hired me in November 1985 shortly after he came to Lexington PD. He was my Chief until he retired in 1992. I am thankful for the chance he gave me and everything he did for me along the way. To Janie and the family, I am so sorry and I am praying for you all. I retired from the Thomasville Police after 31 years and remember him as very professional and as a progressive Chief that worked well with other agencies. My condolences to his family. By all accounts he was a very good man.

My deepest condolences to Chief Powell's family.  Chief Powell hired me in 1984 as the youngest PSO (Public Safety Officer - Police Officer/Firefighter) that the Winston-Salem Police Department had ever hired.  He ALWAYS called me by name when we met in the hallways, Public Safety Center, or out in public.  I had nothing but respect for him not only because he was my Chief but because of the man he was and what he expected from me and every other officer under his command.  I was saddened when he left Winston-Salem and I even considered going to the Lexington PD because it was a pleasure to have served under him.  May God bless and keep his family during this time.  Just know that Chief Powell was well respected within our agency and throughout the State of NC.  Rest in Peace Sir.

I first met Lu Powell in 1980 when he was appointed the Police Chief in Winston-Salem.  He was a very open and friendly man, but could quickly show his "command side" if needed.  He made you think, asked questions to get you to consider other ideas, and was quick to thank folks when a good job was done.  He was a positive influence on my career and taught me a lot about how to be a better supervisor and leader.  He made a number of changes in our organization that shook us from complacency and made us be a much better organization.  Some of these changes were not well liked, but he helped us be better than we had been.  He was my friend, and I shall miss him and his antics and laughs.
