

Born in Abbeville, Alabama, she was the youngest daughter of McKinney and Annalee (Herndon) Wood. She graduated from Abbeville High School as valedictorian and also played on the girls’ basketball and tennis teams. After graduation, she attended Troy State Teacher’s College graduating with a BS degree in Education. She taught briefly in Alabama before moving to Florida in 1956. Mrs. Anthony taught 4th grade at Beulah Beal and Hendricks Avenue Elementary schools. She retired from the Duval County School System in 1981 after 25 years of teaching.
After her retirement Mrs. Anthony enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed playing in several different bridge clubs well into her 90s. Mrs. Anthony will be remembered for her quick wit, intelligence, and the devotion and love she showed her family. She will also always be remembered for her love of fashion, style, and being a true lady.
She is survived by her son William D. Anthony, Jr. (Margaret), her granddaughter Dawn Anthony Roberts (Daren), and great-grandsons Peyton, Grayson, and Brayden Roberts, nephew Wright Wood Simmons (Marianne). Mrs. Anthony also had 3 step-granddaughters Kimberly Balcom, Allison Baker, and Brenda Eberhardy, 3 step-great-grandchildren Zachary Baker, Jeffery Balcom, and Taylor Eberhardy. She is predeceased by her husband, her parents, sisters Mary Emma Silliman and Alberta Simmons, a nephew Charles Silliman, and many cousins.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 9th at 11:00 a.m. at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 729 S. Edgewood Avenue with internment at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, at Trinity Baptist Church, 800 Hammond Blvd.
